LEC Legal Playbook
A practical guide to launching a startup, initial funding rounds, and more—designed for startup incubators and mentors.
In the early stages, founders often face complex legal challenges while working under significant time and resource constraints. Decisions made during the startup phase, during initial funding rounds, or regarding intellectual property, employees, and business partnerships can have long-term consequences.
The latest playbook from the Learning and Exchange Center (LEC) addresses precisely these issues and aims to provide a structured overview of the most important legal topics that often arise in the early stages of a startup. It is practical and action-oriented. It highlights typical pitfalls, offers guidance—such as checklists—and outlines “dos and don’ts.”
The goal of the playbook is to empower mentors to identify relevant issues, ask the right questions, and guide founders toward well-informed decisions, thereby contributing to the professionalization of early-stage startups. This also includes recognizing when expert legal counsel is necessary, as this playbook does not replace tailored legal advice.
The Startup Factories
The Startup Factories being established across Germany as part of the German government’s “EXIST-Leuchtturmwettbewerb Startup Factories” initiative are a key step toward strengthening innovative entrepreneurship at universities. The Learning and Exchange Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice (LEC) supports the development of the Startup Factories through knowledge transfer, networking, and exchange.
Learning and Exchange Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship Practice
Launched in fall 2024 by UnternehmerTUM and the Joachim Herz Foundation, the Learning and Exchange Center supports the emerging Startup Factories in achieving a higher level of professionalization and accelerating spin-offs. To achieve this goal, the LEC operates in these four core areas:
- Strategic Support & Networking Activities
- Knowledge Generation & Provision
- Performance Measurement
- Improvement of framework conditions
