German-American frontiers of science symposia program
The program is conducted in order to bring together outstanding young scholars and scientists from all disciplines within the natural sciences from Germany and the United States.
The symposia challenge them to rethink the boundaries of their disciplines. Together, they strive to reach new frontiers of understanding as they discuss recent advances, cutting edge research, and budding opportunities.
At the same time, the symposia serve to establish and strengthen ties among future leaders of partnering countries. The symposia are intended to stimulate new discussions across disciplines, encourage the exchange of knowledge, and offer participants a start to a productive long-term cooperation with other young scientists in different fields. Collaborations between the participants are supported by follow-up programs offered by the Alexander von Humboldt-Foundation (AvH) and its American partners.

Since 1995 the AvH and the U.S. National Academy of Sciences (NAS) collaborate to organize the German-American Frontiers of Science Symposia. The Frontiers of Research Program was right from the beginning successful and continued to grow. Nowadays symposia are organized with partners in Japan, China, India, Brazil, Israel, Turkey and the United Kingdom. To offer the participants even more possibilities for collaborations the NAS, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science and the AvH decided to organize in 2017 a tri-national Japanese-American-German Frontier of Science Symposium in Germany.
This year this trilateral symposium with about 90 participants (30 from Japan, 30 from the United States, and 30 from Germany) will take place September 21 – 24, 2017 in Bad Neuenahr. In a competitive selection process one fellow from the Joachim Herz Stiftung Add-on Fellowships for Interdisciplinary Science program in systems biology was also invited to participate in the trilateral symposium. Funding on the German side is provided by the Joachim Herz Stiftung and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Because the last bi-national German-American Frontiers of Science Symposium 2016 was held in Potsdam the upcoming symposium in 2018 is planned in Irvine, California/U.S.
