Voluntary Community Work in the U.S.
As part of a pilot project, the US Embassy and the Joachim Herz Stiftung are inviting 15 students from integrated secondary schools in Berlin to the United States for two weeks in the coming fall school vacation. The youngsters will be staying with host families and taking part in local community service projects. The students will gain extensive insights into the concept of public spirit and are to communicate this to their own environment upon returning from their trip to the USA. The participants will discover a new outlook on the world and this experience will help them to further their own personal development. All the program-related costs are paid for by the Joachim Herz Stiftung. Participation in the program will not entail any costs for the individual students.
Closing Date for Applications is August 1, 2011
The pilot project is only for pupils of integrated secondary schools in Berlin and particularly aimed at adolescents who require special support due to their educational, financial, or family background. The youths must be between 15 and 17 years of age on the day of departure and have at least a basic command of English.
The non-profit exchange organization
Deutsches Youth For Understanding Komitee e.V. (YFU) is responsible for the organization and execution of the program. YFU has been organizing school exchanges all over the world for more than 50 years.
